I commonly see even the most well educated people being ignorant and insensitive towards nature. In our anthropocentric society, I see many adults who could do with a dose of wisdom from this show.
While watching this show you develop an appreciation for ecology and realise that humans are just one of the numerous living beings that have a right on this planet. As I am watching it after a gap of decades, I interpret it better than I did before.
To say that The Jungle Book is meant for kids is undermining its significance.

I am not someone who cries during a movie, but this series gives me goosebumps in every episode, even today. There are plenty of emotionally overwhelming scenes throughout the series. You also get to hear Nana Patekar’s voice through Sher Khan.
Another perk of watching it in Hindi is the voice of Mowgli’s wolf mother Chameli – the epitome of maternal love. Keep an ear out for the tiger Sher Khan’s theme – it is as cool as an Ennio Morricone masterpiece. The background music by Hideo Shimazu plays a crucial role in setting the mood. As Mowgli goes about his life in the jungle with his wild friends, he often struggles with his identity and faces moral dilemmas. You get to see friendship, love, family bonding, sexism, strategy and teamwork as practiced by wild animals. The few who defy the laws are dealt with accordingly. The animals follow certain unwritten laws of the jungle. He is mentored by a wise black panther named Bagheera and a sloth bear named Baloo, while his fast friend Pappu/Kichi, a red panda, is often hanging around (literally) with him.

I avoid watching dubbed movies, but we had no choice at that time, and I am not complaining. For the Indian viewers it was dubbed in Hindi and first aired on DD in 1993-1994 as “The Jungle Book” or “जंगल की कहानी”. Like in all film adaptations of the book, the creators took creative liberties and deviated from the original story, but still managed to create a masterpiece. Directed by Fumio Kurokawa and written by Kimio Yabuki, this series was originally telecast in Japan in 1989. “The Jungle Book Shōnen Mowgli” is a Japanese anime adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s collection of stories titled “The Jungle Book”. One such show for me was “The Jungle Book”. Back then, we would adjust our schedules around our favourite TV shows and had alarms set in our mind to them. We had a 14” black and white TV during this period. TV was not so common at that time, and having a colour TV was matter of pride. It started with a single channel delivered through an antenna – the government owned Doordarshan, and ended with multiple private channels delivered through a cable connection. The 1990’s was an interesting period for Television in India. Viewers are feeling nostalgic while watching reruns of their old favourites.
